Corporate Responsibility

Chiltern Distribution Ltd believe that it must lead the way, not only economically, but environmentally and socially as well. The company understands that it can affect the environment in the United Kingdom and beyond on a global scale. The company objective is not only to sustain our environment for future generations but to try and help reverse the effect of damage already done.

The company believe that our corporate responsibility goes beyond our proprietary borders and is committed to a programme of continuous development with regards its sustainability obligations to cooperate with its neighbours and suppliers to develop its business in a sustainable manner and reduce its carbon footprint.

Every effort is made to conserve resources and we monitor specific key performance indicators (KPI’s) throughout the operations focused on driving performance to minimise carbon leakage and have several resources at our disposal, from fuel efficient, state of the art, route planning and vehicle tracking software to utilising renewable energy sources and recycling waste wherever possible.

The company will strive to source products and services locally using suppliers that are compliant with environmental best practice. Its success will be determined on a yearly basis with a commitment to improve. The company has invested greatly in several different initiatives to help achieve this, some of which are listed below:

Diversity & Inclusion

As an organisation we actively welcome diversity and are committed to fostering an environment of equality, opportunity and ensuring all our stakeholders including employees, job applicants and other third parties with whom we deal, are treated fairly and are not subjected to unfair or unlawful discrimination.

We appreciate that an effective equality and diversity policy helps all staff to develop to their full potential, which is clearly in the best interests of both staff and the Company.

We strive to ensure that we not only observe the relevant legislation but also do whatever is necessary to provide genuine equality of opportunity.

Our goal is to provide a working environment free from harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form that may affect the dignity of the individual.”

Fuel Savings

The company has invested greatly in route planning software able to assist with identifying the most fuel-efficient routes in the UK and mainland Europe to reduce CO² emissions. In addition to the planning software all vehicles are fitted with satellite tracking so that vehicles can be monitored throughout the course of their journey to ensure drivers keep to their pre-determined route.

However, this also offers the ability to divert vehicles off route whilst in transit to avoid traffic delays and road closures in the most efficient way. It can also be used to guide drivers to unfamiliar destinations and operates in real time to avoid unnecessary mileage caused by driving around looking for drop points.

Our Vehicles

Fleet vehicles are replaced on a regular basis to ensure compliance with all latest Euro specifications, currently, Euro VI (2014) – 459/2012/EC emissions levels, and to ensure optimum fuel returns associated with operating new vehicles. Synthetic engine oil is used which extends the required oil change intervals as recommended by the vehicle manufacturers.

Reducing Emmisons

KPI’s are set and monitored to evaluate each of the drivers driving style and the level of miles per gallon (MPG) performance each week, which both impact on the level of carbon emissions generated by our business. To minimise this impact, we actively encourage through sharing of this KPI information with staff, creating a culture of continued improvement and friendly competition between drivers.

By measuring these 2 metrics, it has enabled us to drive up the efficiency of our vehicles and actively reduce the levels of carbon emissions generated by each vehicle and we are committed to continue to provide support to our drivers in the form of one-on-one driver training, supported by the vehicle manufacturers dedicated driver training teams.

Our Staff

Our drivers have benefitted by being accompanied on at least 1 trip by a dedicated trainer to offer tips and advice on how to get the most efficient and best performance from their make of truck. This support from the likes of Scania, Volvo, Mercedes, DAF, MAN and Iveco has proved very effective in improving MPG performance across the entire fleet and will continue to be used going forward as a business.

All contracted suppliers maintaining the fleet vehicles and any ancillary equipment are audited to ensure compliance with environmental best practice when it comes to the disposal of exchanged parts, oils & lubricants.
